COVID-19 Testing Assistance for Ohioans Who are Blind or Have Low Vision

Ohio is the first state government to offer free virtual assistance with COVID-19 testing.

Ohio residents can now use a video call to administer any over-the-counter COVID-19 test authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) using the Be My Eyes app. Be My Eyes is a recognized leader in using video call technology and volunteers to make the world more accessible for people who are blind or have low vision.

Getting started with this free service requires four simple steps:

1. Obtain a COVID-19 over-the-counter test.

2. Download the Be My Eyes app on your Apple or Android smartphone, and select “Ohio COVID-19 Testing Assistance”

3. Walk through the testing process with a trained assistant

4. Use your results to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.  

Ohio residents will be connected to an experienced customer support representative from Accessible Pharmacy Services, which has assisted hundreds of Be My Eyes users to complete a variety of at-home medical tests. Once connected, the customer support representative can help individuals:

  • Read print information or instructions included in an at-home COVID-19 test.
  • Provide step-by-step guidance while taking the test.
  • Read the results of a completed test,

The Ohio COVID-19 Testing Assistance Specialized Help Profile will be available to receive calls Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. ET. This service is not a telehealth session. Please note:  The Be My Eyes customer support representatives will not provide healthcare advice. The purpose of this service is to provide access for those who are blind or have low vision to independently self-administer COVID-19 tests. Those who test positive should stay home and contact their healthcare provider if symptoms worsen, including difficulty breathing, or if they are at high risk for developing severe illness from COVID-19 based on their age or any existing medical conditions.
